Joel Carlson's career as a political lawyer began in Johannesburg in 1957 when he exposed the brutal conditions under which farm workers lived in the Bethal district and soon opponents of the Vorster regime were turning to him for their defence. Carlson presented nearly 100 cases of torture to the courts and defended Africans held under the Suppression of Communism Act and the Terrorism Act including the twenty-two Africans who were acquitted after two trials: Nelson Mandela, condemned to life imprisonment, and his wife who was one of the twenty-two.
