Good condition, vellum. Amsterdam: Wetsten, 1707. [32],439,[40] pp. (pp. 97 and 186 misnumbered 67 and 86) including frontispiece and numerous in-text engravings. Title printed in red and black. In Latin. Contemporary vellum, ruled in blind, stamped in gilt. Vellum worn and soiled, text block neatly separated from spine. Ca. 19th-century pencil inscription in English on front pastedown. 19th-century ink ownership inscription of Francis Gardner on front free end-paper. Dampstain in gutter of first forty leaves, affecting frontis. and text in first twenty leaves. An early Dutch printing of the works of Cornelius Nepos (c. 100-24 BCE), including his Lives and fragments of additional works. With a 1675 dedication Signed by the Hackius brothers and a chronology and index. The biographical chapters are as follows: Miltiades, Themistocles, Aristides, Pausanias, Cimon, Lysander, Alcibiades, Thrasybulus, Conon, Dion, Iphicrates, Chabrias, Timotheus, Datames, Epaminondas, Pelopidas, Agesilaus, Eumenes, Phocion, Timoleon, De Regibus, Hamilcar, Hannibal, Cato, and Atticus. The ownership inscription is likely the signature of Francis Gardner (1812-1876), celebrated Headmaster of Boston Latin School, 1851-1876, and editor of the Latin School Series, which included selections from Nepos.
