Good hardcover with tight binding and clean pages, except the previous owner wrote name on the first front fly page. Pages are lightly tanned with age. Dust jacket is in poor condition with major wear and tearing along the edges. Several small sections of the dust jacket are missing. Dust jacket is now protected in mylar. Small white label is attached to the dust jacket spine with scotch tape over it; I attempted to remove the sticker but it started damaging the dust jacket further so I left it. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 373 pages .

The author, Russian-born wife of American journalist Louis Fischer and herself a gifted translator and interpreter, writes about her personal experiences living in the Soviet Union during 1921 and 1927-39. As a personal memoir, it hardly mentions the disastrous famines first under Lenin and in the 1930s under Stalin.
