London: John Murray. 1902. 1st ed., large octavo, boards, folding map, many b&w plates, pp xxiv, 328. Bound in later cloth boards stamped in gilt, with new endpapers. Previous owner's signature. Water mark to the corner of frontis plate. Good condition. The author, Alfred Alcock, was a British naturalist and physician. He specialised in marine zoology. A Naturalist in Indian Seas is considered a natural history travel classic. The book is mostly a narrative describing the Investigator's journey through areas of the Indian Ocean, such as the Laccadive Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. It also details the history of the Investigator, as well as the marine biology of the Indian Ocean. 1st Edition.

Wood p. 184. Most of the book is a quality narrative of the voyage in the Indian Ocean, including Laccadive Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Also included is a history of the ship "Investigator" and its use in gathering information on natural history over more than a decade, with the final section being on the marine biology of the Indian seas.
