She was the founder of the Florida Defenders of the Environment and co-founder of the Alachua Audubon Society, both of which led critical conservation efforts in central Florida. Along with a slew (slough?) of Florida recognitions, including induction into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame, she received the National Wildlife Federation's Conservation Science Award, the NY Zoological Society's gold medal for achievement in biological conservation, and the Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Award.
