"The Natural, Statistical and Civil History of the State of New-York" by James Macauley. 1829 1st edition; Gould & Banks, and William Gould & Co.; Albany, NY. Complete in 3 volumes. The set includes much information about Indians. Three-quarter leather binding with marbled boards and original marbled end papers; raised bands with gilt lettering ("State Department") and the illustration of an eagle on the spine. With fold-out tables of weather data and a "Statement of the Commerce of Each State and Territory." There are 6 pages of reviews of the book at the beginning. Each volume has an Errata page at the back.
From the Preface:
"Two hundred and fifteen years have passed away, since a few adventurers from Holland formed establishments at New-York and Albany: establishments destined to be the future abodes of civilization, of commerce, of opulence, and of the arts and sciences. Here then the history of the States dates its origin.
The method we have adopted in the arrangement of this work has been to divide it into three volumes. These we have subdivided into chapters:
* The first volume treats of the extent of the State, its mountains, hills, champaigns, plains, vales, valleys, marshes, rivers, creeks, lakes, seas, bays, springs, cataracts, and canals; its climate, winds, zoology, &c.
* The second volume treats of the counties, cities, towns and villages; antiquities of the west; origin of the Agoneaseah, their manners, customs, laws and other matters; discovery of America; voyages of Cabot and Hudson; settlement of the New Netherlands by the Dutch, in 1614; location of the Indian tribes; controversies between the Dutch and English; surrender in 1664, and thence to 1750.
* The third volume treats of the war between England and France for the conquest of Canada, the war of the revolution, and other matters which occurred, &c."
Condition:
Some rubbing of the marbled covers; corner wear; the spines have been rebound; contemporary end papers (though the original marbled end papers remain); the title and volume # labels on the spine of volume 1 have chipped off; the title label of volume 3 has partially chipped off. The pages are in very good condition with only some occasional light foxing (though heavier on the original end papers). All volumes have a "Department of State, United States of America - The Library * 1789" label affixed to the front pastedowns; all volumes also have "Department of State Library" ink stamp on a front end paper. Writing in pen ("Department of State") at the top of 2 title pages, and illegible writing at the top of a 3rd title page...no other writing found. Date ink stamp on the back of the title pages. Tiny tear on the title page of volume 1. Tear at the outer edge of page 437 of volume 3. Thin, 2" strip of clear tape at the outer edge of page 107 of volume 1.
