INTRODUCTION SLAPTON LEY Nature Reserve contains a large variety of habitats and plant communities. Its total area is 463 acres (188 ha), of which 106 acres (43 ha) are woodland, 84 acres (34 ha) are shingle, 242 acres (98 ha) are freshwater habitats (swamp, marsh or open water) and the remainder is fields, banks and low cliffs. Where true soils exist they are always of the brown earth type, often shallow and acid (pH 5 - 6.5) and derive from beds of Lower Devonian Dartmouth slate, Mead-foot slates or Permo-triassic breccia.
