Rebacked in new leather, Very Good throughout/no dustwrapper. 16mo. colour plates 1st Edition 1839 of Vol. VIII in the Mammalia series from William Jardine's Naturalist's Library; illustrated study of amphibious carnivora, with focus on Walruses and Seals, but also notably containing a short section on serpents and sea monsters (with three plates of same - plate XXX of The Kraken); also includes introductory chapter 'Memoir of M Francois Peron'; illustrated with 33 coloured engravings, frontispiece plate of Peron, title-page vignette, all with original tissue-guards, and with numerous text illustrations; bound in (thin) contemporary calf, with ornate designs blind-embossed to front and rear boards, and gilt titing and ornamental device to spine; all edges gilt - text block and plates moderately trimmed; from the library of James Whyte, 6th Premier of Tasmania, signed by Whyte to title page - James Whyte was a Scottish-born Australian pastoralist and politician who served as Premier of Tasmania from January 1863 to November 1866; this volume rebacked in new leather (retaining/preserving original 19th-C leather), with new endpapers and new hollow backs; all tissue-guards have taken some offset from the plates, o.w. Very Good throughout, with very occasional foxing.

Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, 1837. 264pp. Color frontispiece of M. Le Comte De Lacepede. 1/2 Brown leather with marbled boards, leather spine label. Spine has a horizontal tear that has been reinforced, there is wear to the corners. The 29 handcolored plates are in excellent condition, which include mostly whales, and other sea creatures. There is a memoir of M. Le Comte De Lacepede, the French naturalist included in this volumes. A vintage copy of this classic work on whales.. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 4 1/2" x 6 1/4".

Edinburgh: W H Lizars , 1842 A good copy of the 1st edition of VolsI & II of the Natural History of British Fishes in the original publisher's brown cloth binding with 68 hand coloured plates. Part of Jardine's Naturalist's Library but complete in themselves. Both volumes have been rebacked: relaying the original spines with gilt titles, and retaining the original green endpapers. Both bindings are clean, tight and sound with slight fading to board edges. Vol I, 1842, with volume listing; black and white frontispiece portrait of Rondelius; vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Rondelet; text and 34 plates bound at the rear. 313pp. The text pages are largely unopened. There is some brown spotting to text and some pages are brown toned. The plates are brightly and well coloured.
