Rebacked in new leather, Very Good throughout/no dustwrapper. 16mo. colour plates 1st Edition 1839 of Vol. VIII in the Mammalia series from William Jardine's Naturalist's Library; illustrated study of amphibious carnivora, with focus on Walruses and Seals, but also notably containing a short section on serpents and sea monsters (with three plates of same - plate XXX of The Kraken); also includes introductory chapter 'Memoir of M Francois Peron'; illustrated with 33 coloured engravings, frontispiece plate of Peron, title-page vignette, all with original tissue-guards, and with numerous text illustrations; bound in (thin) contemporary calf, with ornate designs blind-embossed to front and rear boards, and gilt titing and ornamental device to spine; all edges gilt - text block and plates moderately trimmed; from the library of James Whyte, 6th Premier of Tasmania, signed by Whyte to title page - James Whyte was a Scottish-born Australian pastoralist and politician who served as Premier of Tasmania from January 1863 to November 1866; this volume rebacked in new leather (retaining/preserving original 19th-C leather), with new endpapers and new hollow backs; all tissue-guards have taken some offset from the plates, o.w. Very Good throughout, with very occasional foxing.
