Albany. By Authority of the State, printed by Charles Van Benthuysen, 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. this copy has a still tight binding with peeling to the spine edge, portion missing, the interior is tight and clean of marks. this is Volume 3 of an intended 5 volume series on the natural history of New York, Volume I being published in 1842. James Hall (1811-98), American geologist and palaentologist, was a pioneer in the study of geology in the United States. He was director of the New York Museum of Natural History (1871-98) and directed the Survey of which this volume is part.

Description:
Albany: C. Van Benthuysen, 1859-1861. Hardcover. Fair/No Dust Jacket. Natural History of New York, Geological Survey of New York, Paleontology: Volume III, Containing Descriptions and Figures of the Organic Remains of the Lower Helderberg Group and the Oriskany Sandstone, 1855-1859. Part I: Text and Part II: Plates. Both volumes with quite a bit of wear to the decorative cloth covers, including damages spines. Part I has split between front board and spine, resuling in loose portion of upper spine with some chip missing. Part II has spine covering fully detached, but is preserved and present, laid-in inside front cover. Both boards very loose and starting to detach. Gilt decorations and titling to both books is faded and worn but present and legible. Pages and plates with some foxing and edgwear, but fundamentally clean and intact. Some weakness overall to sewn bindings, but still sound. 532 pages (part I) 120 plates (part II). Please see images.

New York and Albany: D. Appleton & Co. and Wiley & Putnam / C. Van Benthuysen, 1852. Hardcover. 85 plates + 362pp. Thick quarto [29.5 cm] Bound in sturdy black cloth with a gilt stamped title on the spine. Very good. The extremities are gently rubbed. There is a bit of staining on the edges of the text block. The text block has dropped a little. There are two ink stamps from previous owners on the front pastedown, and one ink stamp on the rear pastedown. The endsheets are a little stained along the edges. Previous owner's ink stamp on the first title page. The bottom fore edge corners of the pages are damp stained. The largest damp stains measure 3 inches wide by 2 inches tall. Several pages have other types of minor staining. There is offsetting from the plates. The bottom margin of plate 35 has a small open tear. Browned pages. May require extra postage due to weight.
