EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1835 A fair copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding. With half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Sir Joseph Banks; hand coloured vignette title page with picture of Pentaceros capensis; 2 further title pages; advert; contents listing; Memoir of Sir Joseph Banks; text with black and white illustrations and 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. Publisher's adverts at the rear. The original cloth binding is in good condition being complete and clean with some light bumping to front corners and slight marking to the spine and back board. Internally the original green endpapers are present, with the bookplate of the naturalist Francis Hemmings to the front pastedown. There is a little splitting at the rear endpaper joint. Contents are complete with some brown toning at page edges, including the plates, particularly the top margin. Occasional spotting to text. Stitching is a little wobbly.

With volume listing; half title; engraved black and white frontispiece portrait of Salvianus; vignette title page with black and white illustration of seabirds and a sea monster; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Hippolito Salviani; text including numerous black and white illustrations; 32 hand coloured plates bound at the rear; and a 4 page publisher's catalogue. The original cloth binding has been rebacked relaying the original spine and is sound and tight. It is very clean with bright gilt titles to the spine. There is a slightly faded area towards the edge of the front board. Corners have light wear. There is a slight indentation to the bottom edge of back board close to the spine. Bushnan and William Jardine, with hand coloured plates. The first editions. Two Volumes. In the original publisher's cloth. Illustrated with frontispieces, engraved title pages and 32 hand coloured plates to 'Vol II' and 34 to 'Vol I'. Collated complete. This two volume set features works on Ichthyology from the 'Naturalist's Library' and was written by Sir Jardine William and J. S. Stevenson. Ichthyology refers to the branch of zoology which deals with fishes, with 'Volume One' being on the natural history of fishes and 'Volume Two' being on Perches, a type of freshwater fish.
