About This Item

EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1841 A very good 2 volume set of the 1st edition in original publisher's cloth binding with 61 plates, of which 59 are hand coloured. The bindings have the usual light sunning to spines and board edges. The spines have pulling and slight fraying to spine ends. Corners with light wear. Original green endpapers present and clean in both volumes. Contents: Vol I: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Schomburgk; black and white vignette title page showing fish catching; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; erratum slip; Memoir of Schomburgk; text with numerous black and white illustrations 263pp; and 31 plates bound at the rear, of which 29 are hand coloured. The erratum slip says that there should not have been a plate 24 referred to as there were 2 copies of plate number 25 instead. In this volume, there are 2 different versions of plate 25 and 2 plate 30's. Plate 11 is double size. Vol II: vol listing; frontispiece black and white portrait of Burckhardt; black and white vignette title page showing horses menaced by a serpent; 2 further title pages; advertisement urging readers to complete their sets of Jardine now; contents listing; Memoir of Burckhardt; text 214pp; Prospectus for Illustrations of Indian Ornithology; and 30 hand coloured plates. Contents are in very good clean condition. There is light toning to text pages. Plates are clean and brightly coloured.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
