This was the first part of the massive project of Hubert Howe Bancroft which was met with acclaim by Herbert Spence and Francis Parkman who wrote: "is absolutely the only way of accomplishing the vast undertaking which you have entered upon. This was remarkable not only for its in-depth range of material but also among the greatest collections of material on the Pacific West. It was by its extensive work multidisciplinary by nature covering anthropological, ethnographic, linguistic, archaeological, and historical work on the Indians of the North, Central, and South Americas and, in North America, as far east as the Mississippi Valley. Issued in 1886 in Appleton's Deluxe binding (later Bancroft issued all his books through the huge publishing house he owned that cut out the much smaller profits that came from Eastern publishing houses. Bound in ¾ calf over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, all edges marbled, volumes show wear to corners, boards show some rubbing, repair to front endpaper of volume one. A very good set.
