About This Item

London: National Jazz Federation, 1959. First Edition. Softcover. Fine. 20pp; illustrated throughout from photographs. Contains a Max Harrison essay on the MJQ and their music, along with biographical sketches and portraits of each of the musicians, 7.5" x 10" Lewis founded the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1952. Connie Kay replaced the original drummer, Kenny Clarke, in 1956. Some remember it as a sad day for jazz when the group disbanded in 1974.
