About This Item

Philadelphia: Printed for the U.S. Sanitary Commission, 1864. First Edition. Octavo. 283 pages, map of Andersonville, 4 images of emaciated prisoners. Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton issued a ruling that the horrors of the Confederate camps should be printed in a book with pictures so the "civilized world" would see the "enormity of the crimes committed by the rebels against our prisoners". Issued in 1864 it left no doubt that such as Captain Henry Wirz of Andersonville would be tried as a war criminal at the end of the war. The nearly 13,000 graves outside the prison was a final proof of his inhumanity. Bound in publisher's brown cloth triple ruled in blind, lettering gilt, spine gilt but faded, newer endpapers, lacks front blank, wear through to corners, spine faded, three of the pictures of the prisoners have closed edge tears and some finger soiling.
