Harper & Brothers, 1845-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Bound in publisher's brown cloth. 1st American ed. 384 pages, 9 plates, 23 cm. Hardcover. Good binding. Some smudging to cover. Scattered foxing. <br> Dr. Joseph Wolff was a remarkable Maryland trained missionary. He travelled to Bukhara to "ascertain the fare of Lt. Col. Stoddart and Capt. Connolly. His mission involved him in the gravest peril, for Stoddart and Connolly had already been executed, and their executioner was sent to dispatch Wolff also. He escaped almost miraculously, and brought to England the first authentic news of the fate of the two officers" - DNB, Vol 62, p. 306. Both Stoddart and Connolly were executed for being spies of the British Empire by Emir Nasrullah Khan. Wolff was the son of a Jewish Rabbi, "who converted to Christianity. He spent much of his life attempting to persuade other Jews to follow the same course. His travels were often beset by extraordinary difficulties but his enthusiasm and vitality enabled him to endure, after rescue from slavery in Khorassan, a walk of six hundred miles through Bokhara to Kabul having been robbed of everything including his clothing." Blackmer 1109. Wilson p 246, Ghani p 402.
