Philadelphia: H. G. Carey & I. Lea, and others. Good. 1824. First American Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Good. First American edition in brown paper over publisher's boards. Binding sound. Text is complete and collates as: xi, 482 p., [2] leaves of plates (1 folded map) : ill., map ; 24 cm. The plates consist of a frontispiece opposite the title page and which is pasted to the front free endpaper. The title page has a 1" by 2" irregular piece torn from the lower corner at the fore edge not involving any of the printed text. The creases of the fold-out map are all intact, however there is a large section missing from the upper right corner of the map which fortunately does not involve any of the area involved in the journey (missing is NE portion of Greenland). All edges deckled. There is moderate speckled foxing, more severe near the front and back, and typical of books from this period. Rear paste down endpaper has several newspaper clippings (not related to book) attached. As books issued in this form were intended to be bound, it is uncommon to find a complete copy in this condition. ; frontispiece and fold-out map; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 432 pages .

Description:
Brown leather binding with maroon title plates, gilt decoration and lettering on the spine. Two volumes.
Translated by Samuel Clark. Greek and Latin. Good clean examples of bookmaker's craft. Homer was the reputed author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the two epic poems that are the foundational works of ancient Greek literature. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential writers of all time. The Iliad is set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek kingdoms. It focuses on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles lasting a few weeks during the last year of the war. The Odyssey focuses on the ten-year journey home of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity, the most widespread being that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. Modern scholars consider these accounts legendary. The Homeric… Read More

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

xi+482 pages with frontispiece, fold out map and appendix. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in half leather with gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. First American edition. This expedition also known as the Coppermine Expedition of 1819–1822 had as its goal the exploration of the northern coast of Canada, which was accessed by way of the Coppermine River. The British expedition was organized by the Royal Navy as part of its attempt to discover and map the Northwest Passage. It was the first of three Arctic expeditions to be led by John Franklin, and also included George Back and John Richardson, both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right. The expedition was plagued by poor planning, bad luck and unreliable allies. The expected assistance from the local fur trading companies and native peoples was less forthcoming than expected, and the dysfunctional supply line, coupled with unusually harsh weather and the resulting absence of game, meant that the explorers… Read More
