Captain John Franklin (Sir John) first edition, second issue, with 4 folding engraved maps, one with outline hand-coloring, and 31 engraved plates by Edward Finden and J.Curtis after Curtis, George Back & Robert Hood, 12 hand-colored (mostly aquatints), tissue guards, title and colored map browned, occasional some foxing, contemporary half calf, rubbed, [Abbey, Travel 635; Hill 635; Sabin 25624], 4to, 1823. 783 pp, with addendum, plus a page of Note to page 506 (omitted). No half title or frontispiece. This second issue is scarcer than the first and contains an additional color plate. Maps are dated Nov. 1823, (vs first issue dated Mar. 1823)

Account of Franklin's first expedition which included a 5500 mile overland journey exploring the Arctic coast and back across the Barren Lands in appalling conditions of cold and hunger. Many of the expedition died as a result and one was murdered by a previously-friendly Iroquois voyageur.

Number 1549 of a limited edition.A fort was built near the mouth of the Moose River on James Bay North East Ontario, Canada, by Charles Bayly, governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the early 1670s. In the struggle between the English and French in Canada, the fort changed hands several times and shortly after 1696 was destroyed. In 1730 the company built a post close to the ruins of the original fort. This post has been in continuous operation to the present day. This is the first publication of the Record Society to deal specifically with affairs at the "Bottom of the Bay."Condition:Pages unread. A very good to fine copy without jacket as issued.
