About This Item

Syracuse: A.L. Smith, printed for L.W. Hall, 1846. Hardcover. Fair. 16mo 6" - 7" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete, an early printing of the true First Edition published the prior year, title page saying “reprinted from the Official Copy.” Bound in leather over boards, paper spine-backed. Scuffed a bit at extremities, newer backstrip over spine, slight separation thereof at spine bottom, loosening of backstrip, which appears to be shellacked vellum. Prefatory Notice is from 1846, and thus begins the report from 1843, "A Report of an Exploration of the Country Lying Between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains in the Line fo the Kansas and Great Platte Rivers. Pasted inside is a handsome bookplate from the publisher but that functions also as a School District “Property of” receipt, being from Carillon, No. 8. Reinforced endpapers, heavy toning to frontis matter page edges, some loss thereto, rather burnt edges, scattered foxing, very light toning, a few dog-eared pages, else clean, fairly brightly, unmarked, and nice-looking. Binding generally holding strong, but front pastedown cracked. 305 + v pp.Prefatory Notice, written not by the author but possibly by the publisher or printer, note the scientific significance of the Fremont expeditions, written from Syracuse in 1846.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
