Pages complete xxiv + 180, with 250 full-page black and white engravings on card with captioned tissue-guards.Containing two hundred and fifty beautiful engravings selected from the Dore Bible, Milton, Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, Atala, Fontaine Fairy Realm, Don Quixote, Baron Munchausen, Croquemitaine with critical essays by Edmund Ollier.Page edges lightly scuffed and rubbed with some small scratches to cover boards - some remedial work done to secure the cover boards and spine, but otherwise good. Card plates bright but some foxing to the outer edges. Some foxing to the later text pages.The plate index is a little tricky to use, but all plates are present with the following corrections:Plate 75 misplaced to p130, plate 91 misplaced to p95.Note: This volume is heavy (38x31x10cm, approx 10kg). Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

Small octavo : pp. 4 blank (28) 436, 2 blank : new eps : gilt dentelles with floral motif : polished calf boards with triple gilt ruled border surrounding a floral and foliate border : rebacked with red leather title panel lettered in gilt and the publication year in gilt to tail of spine. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson. His early death at 29 (two years before Johnson) prevented this ambition from being realised.The note at the first blank reads, "Purchased at the sale of J. Abbot's Library Dublin 1840, for 15/6.
