Four gray cloth hardcovers with gilt lettering and decorations to spines; stamped decorations on boards; no jackets. VOLUME 1: 537 pages; lists 89 lithographs (many in color); one, however is missing with no sign of extraction: First Landing at Gorahama opposite p. 256; there is one plate present but not listed Public Bath at Simoda opposite page 408; many smaller woodcuts; 2 b&w foldout maps; good plus condition: fading to binding; slight spotting to front; wear to corners with loss of cloth; inner front hinge just starting; back hinge is good; name and bookplates inside; light foxing to endpapers and front matter; minor stain to outer edge of a few pages near the end; inner tears to an index page; foldouts have minor tears and extra creasing. VOLUME 2: 414 pages plus facsimile of the original treaty with Japan (in Japanese) plus 15 attached folded maps in back and 2 within the text; 26 lithograph plates, some in full color; 16 diagram/chart plates; good plus condition: spine is sunned' a few small holes to front outer hinge; head of spine moderately worn; lower corners of binding lightly bumped; straight; hinges good; name inside (S. E. Howse); some pages toned; modest foxing including to maps and minorly to some plates; Publisher listed as A. O. P. Nicholson whereas volume one was Beverley Tucker. VOLUME 3 titled "Observations on the Zodiacal Light...": same binding; 698 pages; 349 star charts; good plus condition: spine sunned; corners of binding worn or pushed in; straight; hinges good; same name inside; endpapers toned; other pages excellent; publisher is Nicholson. BOOK OF MAPS: similar binding as others with gilt title on front but not on spine: "United States Japan Expedition by Com. M.C. Perry. Vol. II, Maps"; inside are the same 12 attached folded maps as in the back of volume 2; no publication information; good condition: spine sunned; head of spine worn; first map almost detached; minor wear and tear; map of Simoda Harbor is foxed. Four large and heavy books will require extra for shipping..
