John R. Jewitt was a 19th-century English armor maker who is remembered for being taken captive by the native Nootka people in Canada. His 'Narrative', which was written by Richard Alsop, is one of the best sources regarding the people of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America. It describes phial appearance of the Nootka people, clothing and jewelry, tribal body paints, feasts and ceremonies, and even slave trade and sex slaves.

According to Field,

"the details of the adventures of Jewett were drawn from Alsop by the indefatigable queries of Also, who after some years declared that he feared he had done Jewett little good, in furnishing him with a vagabond mode of earning a livelihood, by hawking his book from a wheelbarrow through the country. The narrative of Jewett affords us many new and interesting particulars of the life and habits of the most savage of American aborigines. It is probably as faithful a portrayal of them as could be made by an unlettered man, after the lapse of several years. A vocabulary of the Nootka language, containing nearly one hundred words, occupies page 4.

1698 Hymni Sacri et Novi Catholic Hymns Music Chant Latin Poetry Jean Santeul

Known mostly for his Latin poems, Jean Baptiste de Santeul wrote a plethora of hymns that were published in 17th-century Breviaries. Santeul was a French-born poet who wrote under the name Santolius Victorinus. His complete collection of hymns and hymn texts were published in "Hymni Sacri et Novi" which first appeared in 1689.

This 1698 edition was the first enlarged edition of 'Hymni' and includes Santeul's hymns for all occasions of the Catholic liturgical year. In addition to the Latin text, this book contains hymns with music notation – chant with neumes.

12 mo, publisher cloth backed boards, illustrated with wood engravings, some in color (probably by early owner) 166 pp. Boards are worn and soiled with some chipping at edges, and some fading to title wording. Early owner signatures to preliminaries. Also, some light foxing and a few chips to edges of a couple of pages, but not affecting text The present work appears to be a reworking of a journal published by Jewitt in Boston in 1807. At least two editions were published of this book in 1815, one in Connecticut and the present volume, which was published in New York. Despite the fact that this work was published in numerous editions, Alsop felt he didn't really do Jewitt any real good, because he seemed to be reduced to a vagabond like existence marching around the country hawking his book (Field). According to Streeter Jewitt was the first white man to live with the Indians in Nootka Sound, and the work presents an excellent account of his adventures. Description:
Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
