In Very Good+ Condition: vellum is somewhat stained and soiled; some vellum rubbed away along front fore-edge; old ink marks on front free endpaper; pages are otherwise clean and tight.

Some modest foxing early and late, extremely faint tidemark to lower portion of a number of leaves, but otherwise a very good copy. The rare first edition of this response to Bishop Gibson's pastoral letter - one of two attributed to Tindal - in which the noted freethinking Deist takes to task the Bishop's implicit elevation of faith above reason, and defends in general freedom of thought and discourse against subjugation to religious authority. In an interesting side note to Tindal's response to Gibson's assertion "That in some late Writings publick Stews have been openly vindicated...," he makes reference to the celebrated pseudonymously published 1724 pamphlet by Mandeville, A MODEST DEFENCE OF PUBLICK STEWS .... Contemporary half dark blue morocco by Bumpus of Oxford Street (London), with raised bands and gilt tooling on spine, single gilt rules on covers, and top edge gilt. Penciled ownership inscription of North Carolina collector, Forster A. Sondley, on the front flyleaf. Tasteful bookplate of Sondley Reference Library and gilt manuscript call number on front pastedown. Ink stamp on front free endpaper, verso of title, and in margin of one other page. This edition has a colorful bibliographical history. Erroneously listed in Wright II 649 for the 1868 edition under the authorship of Cozzens. BAL 4010 corrects; Halkett II, 273. The edition here precedes both Wright and BAL. Included in this copy is correspondence from the Beinecke Library politely declining to purchase this particular volume, but including a copy of correspondence between Blanck and Gallup regarding the difference between the 1867 and 1868 editions, with Gallup requesting an additional entry in BAL regarding the same. Denman's bibliography of Ferguson states that "Preface" in this edition speculates as to the identity of the author and differs significantly from the "Ante-Preface" in the 1868 edition which corrects the misattribution, as Ferguson admitted to authorship the prior… Read More
