London: Printed for Francis Smith ..., 1681. 59,[1]pp. plus preliminary blank. Folio. Extracted from nonce volume, with old ink foliation in upper fore-corners. Somewhat tanned and lightly foxed, otherwise about very good. First edition. This copy is in the regular form, rather than the variant with the inserted additional [4]pp. of "The book- seller to the reader. " This work by the prolific controversialist took "its name though not its theme from Bishop Herbert Croft's work [and] denounced all independent ecclesiastical jurisdiction. The church's power was defined by regnum, but its courts operated under the myth of a jus divinum: they were relics of popery. Hickeringill used his scholarly research into history and law to underpin a practicable assault on priestly authority. He taught, for example, that it was not 'sacrilege' for parishioners to withhold tithes..." - DNB. ESTC R30784. WING H1821.

London: Printed and Sold by J. Peele, at Locke's Head..., 1728.. 72pp. Octavo (signed in 4s). Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume, lower edges partially untrimmed. Some modest foxing early and late, extremely faint tidemark to lower portion of a number of leaves, but otherwise a very good copy. The rare first edition of this response to Bishop Gibson's pastoral letter - one of two attributed to Tindal - in which the noted freethinking Deist takes to task the Bishop's implicit elevation of faith above reason, and defends in general freedom of thought and discourse against subjugation to religious authority. In an interesting side note to Tindal's response to Gibson's assertion "That in some late Writings publick Stews have been openly vindicated...," he makes reference to the celebrated pseudonymously published 1724 pamphlet by Mandeville, A MODEST DEFENCE OF PUBLICK STEWS .... This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of… Read More
