London: Chapman and Hall, 1870. First Edition, First State. Hardcover. 190p. plus a 32p. publisher's catalogue. A green hardcover book in very good condition decorated with beautiful gilt and black stamping. Corners and edges a bit worn; top rear corner bumped. A gift inscription dated October 29, 1870 on front free endpaper. Tissue cover for the frontis portrait tanned and loose but still attached. Binding a bit shaken, but secure enough for normal handling. Text clean. A lovely copy. Smith #16. With Twelve Illustrations by S.L. Fildes, and a Portrait. First book edition of Dickens' last novel (it was first issued in 6 parts with pictorial wrappers). A publisher's note, dated 12 August 1870, explains that Dickens died before finishing this book and that what is in the book is all he wrote. Moreover, there is no indication of how this tale was to end. <br/> <br/> Includes a 32-page publisher's catalogue at the rear.
