Lockhart's recollections are also a revealing insight into the early life and background of a man who went on to a career of great distinction in the Diplomatic Service in Russia during the First World War; as a banker, writer and journalist between the wars; and as Director General of the Political Warfare Executive at the Foreign Office from 1941-45.
