About This Item

New York: Alfred a Knopf, 1958. First Edition. Octavo. xiii, 236(1)pp., vii, (2)pp. The author came from a long line of family members of printers from the late 18th century on. Hunter recollects printing shops and remembers how he was influenced by William Morris and the Kelmscott press. He later became associated with Elbert Hubbard's Roycroft shop in New York. He stayed there until 1908 when he finally got the chance to visit Europe. While in Europe he graduated from the old Royal Austrian School of Printing in Vienna, then he went to London where he worked as a commercial designer. Dard Hunter became the known as the specialist of paper. This volume contains a paper made from the press of Dard Hunter. A near fine copy bound in brick cloth centrally stamped in gilt over blue block, spine lettering gilt over blue, in near fine clipped dust jacket.
