About This Item
Paris: Privately Printed By the Author, 1922. Quarter cloth, cream cloth spine with green papered boards with gold lettering and nude female torso. xviii, 336 pages plus 4 page afterword. 1 page errata tipped in. Illustrated with nudes mostly as chapter tail pieces with two full page plates. "Printed in Germany" stamped at the foot of the title page, also in french : "Imprime en Allemagne". The book is inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Joseph A. Mayhew/From Frank Harris---/ this Easter 1926" and following beneath : "Now as of old, men by themselves are priced,/ For silver Judas sold himself ---- not Christ!/ And still the eunucks whimpered/As I spoke and with force/They whipered and they simpered/My writing was much too coarse/ Hessie". A particularly interesting verse inscription, given that it obviously refers to the reception the memoir received and the troouble Harris had having it published. Jospeh Mayhew the recipient of the book and dedicatee, unable to ascertain his relationship to Harris, although there is a couple named Mayhew. Lorna Mayhew is one of Harris's lovers her husband seems unaware of their relationship. The book is a bit rubbed with the corners worn to the board, the title panel on the spine ir rubbed so that the title lettering is indistict. Also the lower corner of the rear board has a stress crease across it. Spine is also cocked.Otherwise quite a good copy, all complete and in good order, pages quite clean throughout with no foxing etc. . Inscribed by the Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
