Autobiography of a master engraver and natural history author / illustrator of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Bewick's great achievement was A History of British Birds two volumes published respectively in 1797 and 1804, with a supplement in 1821. While specifically British the work is the forerunner of all modern field guides.
