Odhams Press Limited. London. 1947. FOUR VOLUMES. First Odhams Press editions. 8vo. (8.5 x 5.7 inches). Finely bound for Churchill, by Zaehnsdorf bookbinders, for presentation. My early life is inscribed 'To Air Commodore G. Powell from Winston S. Churchill. 1948', Thoughts and Adventures is signed 'W S Churchill', and the other two volumes are initialled by Churchill, all in black ink on the front blank endpapers. These are later editions of earlier titles but all four are the first printings of these Odhams Press editions, and are four of an unknown number of Odhams printings that were specially bound for presentation by Churchill. Bound by Zaehnsdorf, and with their gilt name stamp to the inner front boards, in full red morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt piping. The compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Double gilt ruled borders to the boards. All four front boards have a gilt stamped facsimile of Churchill's signature to the bottom of the panel. Board edges double ruled in gilt. Decorative gilt rolled inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. Great Contemporaries has a small mark to the bottom of the spine otherwise the binding is clean and bright. The other three volumes all have staining to the bindings on the boards and spines and a couple have some bowing but they are all still attractive and sound. The blank endpapers have some offsetting around the edges and matching the lines of the endpapers. Some occasional foxing to some of the text pages but generally clean and tidy books throughout. The recipient of these four books was Air Commodore Griffith 'Taffy' Powell, a pilot who frequently flew Churchill both during the war with R A F Ferry Command and after when he was a commercial pilot, where he pioneered the development of Silver Cities Air Ferries, flying passengers and their cars between Britain and the continent. He is said to have offered Churchill free flights during his wilderness years and these books were probably given as a thank you for this generosity as well as Powell's war time work. He wrote a book about his years as a pilot, 'Ferryman: from Ferry Command to Silver City', which was published in England in 1982. The book contains mention of these volumes 'After his last flight to North Africa he (Churchill) gave me a handsomely bound and autographed set of his early works... ' , and a photo of Powell, stood outside of an aircraft with Churchill. A copy of the first edition of this book is included with the 4 Churchill books. I do not know how many books from these Odhams editions were bound for presentation but they are not common. I had three of these titles, in identical bindings, and all inscribed, signed and initialled by Churchill to the same person, back in 2006 but have not seen any others since.

Description:
Cannes. 1966. NP. 1966. Quarto (285mm x 233mm). 20 typed sheets in French (rectos only), legibly hand-corrected throughout by Brassai in black ink. Housed in a black cloth album, with each sheet in a separate clear plastic file. In excellent condition, the final page a little creased and with minor loss to right-hand side, affecting one letter. Overall fresh and clean. ------ A superb unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript in French, in which Brassai recounts his visit to Picasso, a long-standing friend, at his home near Cannes. Brassai, who photographed much of Picasso's work in the 1940s, had published Conversations with Picasso in 1964, in which he created an intimate portrait of Picasso, covering their friendship and artistic collaboration, and recording each of their meetings with minute detail. Picasso said of the volume, "Read this book if you want to understand me." This account is written in a similar style, and during the course of the afternoon, Picasso speaks about his nostalgia… Read More

Collins. London. 1968. FIRST EDITION. 4to. (10.3 x 7.6 inches). 32pp. Illustrated in colour by the Author. Original colour illustrated boards and in the rare original dustwrapper. Two pages with minor blemishes but overall a bright and clean copy in the original colour printed dustwrapper, which reproduces the board illustrations and lettering. Some minor bumping to the board edges. One small closed tear (less than 1 inch) to the bottom front hinge of the wrapper, which also has some light creasing to the edges but overall this is a superior copy of the notoriously rare book. ---- A better than very good First edition of Judith Kerr's first, and most beloved book. Never out of print and with sales exceeding 5 million copies, it has been animated for television and adapted into a hugely successful stage play. The first edition is rare, especially so in the original dust-jacket.

Description:
London: Odhams Press Limited, 1936-1939. Winston Churchill, in addition to his careers of soldier and politician, was a prolific writer under the pen name 'Winston S. Churchill'. After being commissioned into the 4th Queen's Own Hussars in 1895, Churchill gained permission to observe the Cuban War of Independence, and sent war reports to The Daily Graphic. He continued his war journalism in British India, at the Siege of Malakand, then in the Sudan during the Mahdist War and in southern Africa during the Second Boer War. Churchill's fictional output included one novel and a short story, but his main output comprised non-fiction. After he was elected as an MP, over 130 of his speeches or parliamentary answers were also published in pamphlets or booklets; many were subsequently published in collected editions. Churchill received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 "for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted… Read More
