He inspected the settlements of the London Missionary Society and returned to England with his reports of the colony and its hinterland in 1814. Campbell provides a great deal of information in the appendix including prayers in native languages. 'Few Englishmen at that time had performed such a feat, and on his return his appearances on missionary platforms in London and throughout the country were received with enthusiasm' (DNB). He made contact with several tribes previously unreached and named many rivers, villages, mountains, lakes and other topographical features.
