FAIRIES. MUSHROOM FAIRIES by Adah Louise Sutton. Akron: Saalfield (1910). Oblong 4to (12 x 9"), cloth backed pictorial boards, 159p., some inevitable edge wear but much less than usual, otherwise this is a better than Very Good copy for this title. This is a fabulous book about a family of humanized mushroom fairies that live in a house made from a mushroom, and their encounters with their enemies the Toadstool Imps. Printed on coated paper, every page of text is illustrated with a pictorial border and there are 12 fabulous chromolithographed plates. Adah Sutton was the wife of Arthur Saalfield, the publisher of this and hundred's of other children's books. This is a nice copy of a rare American picture book.

New York: The Saalfield Publishing Co., 1910. Undated [1910]. Somewhat worn copy of this scarce book, lacking the title page and frontis illustrations, the remaining 11 color plates present. Pictorial color hardcover with dark olive cloth spine, oblong, about 9" x 12". Covers rubbed and soiled, with considerable chipping along the far outer edges, hinges internally cracked but secure, text block shaken but basically sound, pages occasionally worn around the edges with some shrot closed tears and occasional finger soil, plates age-darkened, especially around the edges, but are in good to very good condition overall, no names or other markings.. Hard Cover. Fair. Oblong 4to.

All text inside illustrated chromolithograph borders printed in green. Edges rubbed and some dampstaining to boards. Some toning to endpapers and throughout, mostly to margins. Binding a bit shaken but overall a good and very bright copy of a scarce book. OCLC describes the present book as an "unathorized translation" of Smattingarnas Svampbok (1900) by the Swedish writer and illustrator Signe Aspelin (1881-1961), though Mushroom Fairies itself does not mention Aspelin or even that it is a translation. A search for more information on this topic proved inconclusive.
