She was educated in the public schools of Cincinnati and Lockland and attended Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee. She received her M. A. Degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College, Plainfield, Vermont at the age of 42 through its Adult Degree Program. Lula is married to retired DuPont executive John R. Cooper, Ph. D. They have four adult children and seven grandchildren. Lula was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Wilmington, Delaware in the 1960's. Lula held numerous gubernatorial appointments in the early 70's. She was the first African-American center director of the Wilmington Y. W. C. A and directed the largest Head Start/Day Care Program in New Castle County, Delaware. As an artist/craftsperson and writer, Lula was recognized for her work through many exhibitions and was a presidential appointee to the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. Lula has published a book of poetry "A Murmur of Essence", a children's book "How the Penguins Got Their Polka Dots" co-authored with Aby Mendoza and The Raven's Song: A Memoir of Early Childhood--described as "My life story to age 9".; 24 pages .
