Facsimile of the first page of Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" as frontispiece, plus numerous monochrome photographs to plates. Publishers' maroon cloth with silver titles and panel to spine in unclipped black-and-red dust-jacket. A clean crisp copy with no annotation or inscriptions. Jacket very lightly scuffed & soiled, with minor loss at lower fold. Near Fine in Very Good jacket. The first book to treat the detective story as a literary form, in a comprehensive history of early crime fiction from its inception with Poe's "Murders in the Rue Morgue", through the Golden Age and brought up-to-date. Subjects include American, British and French authors, with an extensive "Who's Who" section. Scarce.
