About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Elizabeth Peters: A pseudonym used by Barbara Mertz, as Peters she is best known for her Amelia Peabody series, featuring a family of archaeologists exploring Egyptian tombs. Mertz held a PhD in Egyptology. In addition to the 20 Peabody novels, Mertz, as Peters, wrote six Vicky Bliss novels, four Jacqueline Kirby novels and nine stand alone novels. Mertz died in 2013. This is the third Peabody Mystery.

Marian Babson: Babson had a writing career that ran from 1971 to 2012. She passed away in 2017. She wrote three short detective series, the longest being the seven edition Trixie and Evangeline series, but Babson also wrote 32 stand alone detective novels. Altogether Babson published 45 novels.

Anna Clarke: South African born, Clarke was educated in Canada and the United Kingdom, settling in Brighton. She began he writing career in her 40s, and published 26 books between 1968 and 1996, including the nine volume Paula Glenning series. Clarke died in 2004. This is the first Glenning Mystery.

Synopsis

Radcliffe Emerson, the irascible husband of fellow archaeologist and Egyptologist Amelia Peabody, has earned the nickname "Father of Curses" -- and at Mazghunah he demonstrates why. Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, he and Amelia are resigned to excavating mounds of rubble in the middle of nowhere. And there is nothing in this barren area worthy of their interest -- until an antiquities dealer is murdered in his own shop. A second sighting of a sinister stranger from the crime scene, a mysterious scrap of papyrus, and a missing mummy case have all whetted Amelia's curiosity. But when the Emersons start digging for answers in an ancient tomb, events take a darker and deadlier turn -- and there may be no surviving the very modern terrors their efforts reveal.
