Washington DC: [GPO], 1850. 8p., disbound pamphlet, otherwise minor handling and toning. 31st Congress, 1st Session, Senate. Rep. Com. No. 14. In 1845, a US-built ship called the Pons was discovered to be carrying hundreds of African captives, most of them under 20 years of age, destined for slavery in the Western hemisphere. The children are described as having been "in a naked, starving, and almost dying condition." The USS Yorkdown delivered them instead to Liberia, where the American Colonization Society paid for their food, clothing, lodging, and the expense of training them in various trades. In this document, the Society seeks compensation from the US government for the expenses born of this undertaking.
