About This Item

T. & T. Clark, Edinborough, 1884. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Poor Condition. preface by author, note by the translator. Dark brown coloured end pages. Dark purple coloured cloth covered boards with self embossed design to the edges of the covers with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. First published in France in 1882, and this being the first English edition. A history of the science of physics, with a large element of metaphysics thrown in for good measure. The book is definitely showing age and use – please see photograph /s. Bumping, rubbing and fraying of the back strip corners, book corners, where the underlying board is visible and rubbing of the lower book edges. Stains, multiple, to the front and rear panel, with very noticeable rubbing and flecking also noticeable. Heavy rubbing to either side of the back strip which also shows quite difficult fading. Uniform tanning and foxing of the text block edges with, surprisingly light age toning of the pages, albeit with some faint foxing throughout. The front and rear hinges have cracked – particularly the rear. Previous owners details to the top right-hand corner of the title page. This is the first edition in the English language. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [3], IV - XII, [1], 2 - 324, [8 titles from publishing] pages,. Deckled Front and Top Edge (rough cut). Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
