Near fine. <p>First American edition.<p>Laid in is an autograph letter to Peter Matthiessen and his wife penned on HarperCollins letterhead and signed by publisher Cass Canfield, Jr.: "5/10/01 / Pierre and Maria -- / Looking forward to seeing you both at the PR frolic in a few weeks. / Cass."<p>Caaa Canfield,Jr. [son of another major figure in the history of HarperCollins] joined the company as assistant to the president in 1958 and remained there until his retirement in 2004. During his forty-six-year career at Harper he worked with such authors as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Craig Claiborne and Maria Vargas Llosa, eventually becoming head of the Trade Book Division.
