About This Item

Both the Borba and the Arraiolos were built in 1948, Borba by William Doxford & Sons in Sunderland, UK, and Arraiolos by Bartram & Sons in Sunderland, UK, on the River Wear (see below);---Borba documents; 1. small typed 3-page "Tabela Dos Deslocamentos, N/M Borba", 2-hole punched, stapled, undated, unsigned; 2. typed letter to "Ship's Command, M.S. Borba" on letterhead of "Carl Scholle, Shipbroker & Steamship Agent" dated at "Bremen 21st May 1962", rubber stamped and signed.---Arraiolos documents: 1. 1-page typed "Protesto Por Suposicao De Avarias", rubber stamped with the ship's stamp, signed by four officials; 2. an identical copy of #1, again with original stamp and signatures; 3. 1-page typed "Relacao Da Carga Inflamavel", original stamp and captain's signature; 4. 1-page typed "Auto De Tansmissao De Cargo", no stamps or signatures; 5. 2-page typed "Relatorio Do Estado De Limpeza", dated "22-3-1960", stamped and signed by the captain; 6.1-page typed "Protesto Por Queda De Carga Ao Mar", 2 original signatures; 7. 1-page typed "protestaDe Arribada Por Falta De Combustivel", unsigned. NOTE: All documents acquired from estate of previous Portuguese-Canadian owner, a ship model maker and published ship historian, and were tucked inside an unrelated book (S. S. INDIANA: Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation (Latitudes 0-Grad - 39) (Declinations 0-Grad - 29 Grad ), United States Hydrographic Office H. O. Pub. No. 249, Vol. II [1952]), but listed separately as I see no relationship between the two. Of related interest, see also our listing for J. W. Smith's Where Ships are Born: Sunderland 1346-1946: A History of Shipbuilding on the River Wear..
