About This Item

London: John Murray, 1857. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. ix, 687. Thick 8vo. Handsomely bound in contemporary 3/4 leather over marbleds boards. With folding lithographed frontispiece of Victoria Falls (signed in the plate by Whymper), a steel engraving of the author facing page 1, (untinted) full-page engravings and line drawings in the text, and two folding maps tabbed-in at the end. Three page 8s, second marked with an asterisk, and third with 'dagger'. No advertisements at end of book. Three book plates of previous owners: the first, a small (one inch by one inch) armorial leather label, is of Robert Hoe (1839-1909, a New York printing press manufacturer, book collector and founder of the Grolier Club. The second, a more conventional armorial bookplate printed on paper, is of Lewis Montgomery Bond, a Philadelphia tea merchant. The third, a printed label affixed to the inside of the rear board, is of Charles Williston McAlpin (1865-1942), a member of a prominent family involved in the industrial and social development of New York City in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The extremities of the boards are modertaely rubbed, as is the marbled paper on the front board. The hinges are tight, and the contents tightly bound and free of foxing or soiling. Overall, an interesting association copy of the second state of the first edition in good+, to very good, condition.
