About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form.
About our authors:
William Haggard: Haggard was a writer of British spy thrillers, most of which involved Colonel Charles Russell. Under his real name, Richard Clayton, Haggard spent much of his working life as a civil servant in India. Haggard died in 1993. The Mischief Makers is the 21st Russell novel.
George Bagby: A pen name of Aaron Marc Stein. An American writer of mystery and crime novels, Stein also wrote under the pen name Hampton Stone. He wrote four detective series, the most significant one being the Inspector Schmidt series of 49 novels. All told, Stein published 109 novels. Stein died in 1985. The Golden Creep is the 48th of those 49 Inspector Schmidt novels.
Michael Gilbert: Gilbert published 34 novels, 18 of which were stand alone novels. The remaining 16 involved one of four recurring detectives, Inspector Hazelrigg, Patrick Petrella, Inspector Mercer and Luke Pagan. Gilbert, once named a Mystery Writers Grand Master, passed away in 2006. End-Game (also published as he Final Throw) is one of Gilbert's stand alone novels.
