About This Item
London,UK: J. Nutt, 1702. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good+/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Modern restoration in tough brown cloth with gilt spine lettering, and new endsheets in off white a full shade brighter than the text. It seems certain to me that the text edges were cut to size, the page titling varies from 1/4" down from page top to flush on a few pages. The text is unusually decent, supple if a trifle wavy, very few flaws worthy of note, remarkably minimal foxing. The last few pages have extra rippling, perhaps as made. Boards measures 7 3/4 x 4 3/4". From the title page, "The Miscellaneous Works Of The Honourable Charles Sedley, Bar' containing Satyrs, Epigrams, Court-characters, Translations, Essays and Speeches in Parliament. Collected into one Volume. To which is added, The Death of Marc Antony: A Tragedy never Before Printed. Published from the Original Manuscripts, by Capt. Ayloffe. London: printed and fold by J. Nutt, near Stationers Hall, 1702." The first section numbers 1 thru 213 pages and is preceded by 7 leaves of title page and preface. Speeches follow with pages numbering 1 thru 24, preceded by title page with verso blank. The play follows, pages 1 thru 64 (first 2 are T.P. and Dramatis personae w/o numbers.) Two light pencil notes appear on title page of main section. The collectors notes from many years ago indicate first thus. The gather of the leaves is primarily octavo.
