New York: W.W. Norton & Company. Very Good in Very Good dj. (c.1950). First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [cheaply-manufactured book showing wear to boards at all corners and along bottom edge, otherwise a decent clean copy; jacket has a couple of tiny shallow chips, at top of rear panel and top of spine (the latter slightly affecting the author's name)]. INSCRIBED humorously to a friend and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, dated in the year of publication. Satirical novel about a small Mexican fishing village which gets "civilized" (and corrupted) when an American buyer of shark livers comes to town to do business with Domingo Gonzales, "a notorious deadbeat who caught nothing but sharks." The author had previously written three novels (including the justly famous "Detour"), although this fact is curiously unmentioned in the jacket blurb for this book -- which emphasizes his extensive travels about (and two-year residence in) Mexico, while off-handedly noting that "he has done much free-lance writing for magazines and movies." (This is also the only one of his four novels to bear a photograph of its author on the jacket.) Signed by Author .

Description:
New York: W.W. Norton, 1950. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First edition. Illustrated by William de la Torre. Small bookstore label on the front fly, and old tape shadows on the pastedowns where a previous owner had affixed the flaps, else fine in an attractive, very good dustwrapper that has been laminated, has corresponding shadows on the flaps, and has suffered some modest fading at the extremities. The last of the author's four novels, and his only non-mystery. Comic and sly novel about a sleepy Mexican fishing village where the only catch is sharks. The village achieves the luxuries of modern civilization when an American buyer of shark livers moves in. Goldsmith, a novelist and screenwriter, is best known for his classic noir novel *Detour*, which was made into the seminal cult noir film. Very scarce.

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Description:
New York: Random House, 1959. Book. Illus. by Sam March (dust jacket design). Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition.. Small octavo. Humes's second novel, following 'The Underground City,' both of which led to his being considered by Esquire magazine as having the same promise as two obscure guys named Updike and Styron (whoever they are). Anyway, he met a guy named Leary who introduced him to a little substance known as LSD, and after seriously indulging his fondness for the hallucinogen he became a trifle paranoid and a bit delusional, which pretty much ended his writing career. Humes was co-founder (with Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton) of The Paris Review. He died of prostate cancer in 1992. Black cloth w/gilt lettering, 184 pages. Mildly cocked, light general wear, in price-clipped dust jacket w/light rubbing, light edgewear, creases to fore-edges of both flaps..
