Inscribed on the front free endpaper to Henry Justin Smith in the year of publication, who was the Managing Editor of the Chicago Daily News. Eleven chapters include portraits with authors such as Carl Sandburg, Sherwood Anderson, Robert Herrick, Harriet Monroe and "Wallace Smith and the symbolical and diabolical straight black line.
