A tight, attractive first edition of this volume in "The Burton Holmes Travel Stories" series -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped facing the half-title page is an Autograph Quotation Signed from Holmes, 1p, 4 " X 4", Philadelphia, PA, November 1906. On a slip bearing a printed "The Bellevue-Stratford," the landmark Philadelphia hotel, he boldly pens in brown ink: "To travel / is to possess / the world / E. Burton Holmes.: Near fine. Holmes (1870-1958) was a pioneering American documentary filmmaker, travel lecturer, author and photographer who toured the world and presented his images and films to audiences from 1890 to 1958. A charming volume with handsome sentiment from the preeminent travel write of the first half of the 20th century.
