A Collection Of Memoirs Edited By Witte (Witten), A Major Source Of Information On European Seventeenth Century Intellectual History. Henning Witte Was One Of The Most Prolific Literary Historians Of The Seventeenth Century. Born In Riga In 1634, He Attended The Grammar School Of Gustav Adolf For Four Years, Studied In Helmstedt (1661) And At Other German Universities, And Traveled To Germany, Holland, England, And Sweden, Where He Had Many Connections With Outstanding Scholars, With Whom He Later Conducted An Exchange Of Letters. In 1666 He Returned To Riga, Where He Lived First As A Private Tutor And Scholar, The Results Of Which He Published For The Most Part In The Seventies And Eighties Until, In 1677, He Became Professor Of Eloquence And History At The Gymnasium Of Riga. His Great And Small Writings Of Historical, Biographical, And Theological Content, And His Epigraphs And Poems, Were Well Received. The Most Important Of These Is The Memoria Praeclarorum In Riga. The Two Volumes Of His "Diarium Biographicum" (Riga 1688 And 1691) Fall Into This Category. In Addition To Livonia, His Collections Of Memoranda, Programs, Parentheses, And Writings Which He Published Under The Title Of "Memoriae" In The Years 1674-1685, Were Important Historical Records. Henning Witte Was The Brother Of Johann Witte, 1614-1657, Who Represented Riga For Seven Years At The Swedish Royal Court, And Whose Collection Of Materials On The History Of Riga In The City Library, Which He Designed As A City Archivist, Has Great Importance As Some Of The Sources From Which The Collector Had Drawn Were Destroyed By The Fire Of The Oberkanzlei Of 1674.
