Spine labels chipped off. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Paper browning and vol. 1 has some small tears and rough edges at top edges. Vol. 2 has torn front pastedown. Labels, including one for a bookseller, on rear pastedowns. Mackintosh was a Scottish jurist, politician and historian. Remarkably, he was trained as a doctor and barrister, but also worked as a journalist, judge, administrator, professor, and philosopher. His account of his many careers is well worth reading.
