After Louis's first wife died in 1683, he married her secretly. On the king's death in 1715, she retired to the educational institution for poor noblewomen she had founded in 1686. She was accused of having great influence over the king, especially in regard to the persecution of the Protestants. Two volumes bound into one, with the number '4' on spine. Letters cover the period 1700 to 1725; text is in French.

The 1854 edition of Jacob Abbott's The History of Madame Roland, part of the Abbott's Histories series. Red cloth, blindstamped on both front and back. Gilt on spine. Famed full-color frontispiece is intact, as is tipped-in protective tissue. All eight B&W engravings are intact, including frontispiece. (Plate on page 97 has a deckled bottom edge.)Spine is discolored and darker than rest of jacket, with slight wear on heel and top. Pages are age tanned and have small stains. Two of the pages are uncut.All four endpapers are significantly discolored with a black waxy substance (see photos), something like crayon.

During a visit to the Palace of Versailles, on the anniversary of the French Revolution, two ordinary women saw the French Queen, Marie Antionette sitting in the gardens in front of them, along with nobles, gardeners, houses, bridges and stones that when they went back were no longer there. Their timeslip experience has become known as the Ghosts of the Petit Trianon. Previously out of print, this is a new edition with additional timeslip type experiences at Versailles. A hard to find item.
