Burwell was a private in the 43rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. He has annotated Early's with a number of marginal comments. A limited, privately printed edition produced in Toronto for private circulation. The work was reprinted the following year in Augusta, Georgia, Lynchburg, Virginia, and New Orleans. The first of several memoirs written by one of Lee's most prominent generals, this account covers the campaign in Virginia from the Rapidan to the James River and the campaign in Maryland and the Valley of Virginia during the last year of the war.
