About This Item
New York: Knapp Co., 1898. Ephemera. Very good condition. An illustrated lithograph certifying Josie Tennant as a life member of the Poughkeepsie, NY chapter of the Missionary Society. The teacher holds a Buddha in one hand while pointing to China on the map of Asia on the wall. His audience of children includes an African American and a Chinese child. The children are attentive and some are donating funds to the cause ($3). Completed and signed by Sidney H. Austin, and G.G Ostrander.
The Missionary societies of all religions gave handsome certificates to their donors, and clearly were successful at targeting men, women and even children.
9 1/4 x 12", b&w, cream paper with decoration. Toned evenly, couple sml. marks in far margins.
