Dent, 1930.. fFIRST EDITION 1960, SIGNED IN INK ON FRONT ENDPAPER BY BERNARD HERRMANN FROM NEW YORK IN APRIL 1938. 8vo, approximately 250 x 185 mm, 9¾ x 7 inches, facsimile of early music manuscript as frontispiece, 200 musical illustrations in the text, pages: xii, 204 including index, bound in original publisher's blue cloth, small black vignette to upper cover, black lettering on spine. Spine slightly yellowed, head and tail of spine very slightly worn with minute nicks to cloth, hinges rubbed with a couple of tiny splits to lower hinge, corners a touch rubbed, minor marks to cloth, contents clean. A very good copy, lacking dustwrapper. This was the copy of Bernard Herrmann (1911 1975), an American composer famous for his work in motion pictures. An Academy Award-winner (for The Devil and Daniel Webster, 1941), he is particularly known for his collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock, most famously Psycho, North by Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Vertigo. He also composed notable scores for many other movies, including Citizen Kane, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Cape Fear, and Taxi Driver. He worked extensively in radio drama (most notably for Orson Welles), composed the scores for several fantasy films by Ray Harryhausen, and many TV programs including Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone and Have Gun Will Travel. He became Chief Conductor to the CBS Symphony Orchestra in 1943 and was responsible for introducing more new works to U.S. audiences than any other conductor. During the 1940s, Herrmann's own concert music was taken up and played by such celebrated maestri as Leopold Stokowski, Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Thomas Beecham and Eugene Ormandy. The artist's abstract and quite varied series of 43 drawings of flags, all printed monochrome on the recto of pages. Kingsley Parker has been exhibiting and represented by galleries since the mid-1970s and has a work in the collection of the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, NY. The artist is quite active with new works. Signed in ink "K. Parker/1976 ©" in the front matter where Parker explains his motivation for drawing the series of abstract flags. Copy 158 of a limited edition of 600, numbered in the colophon. Approximately 44 pages, unpaginated. Printed on fine, machine-made paper in brown wraps.
