Map illustrated endpapers, both different, front end paper showing map of Japan at the end of the XVIIth century, rear end paper showing modern Japan. The text is illustrated with both colour and black-and-white photography in four sections, along with black-and-white line drawings and illustrations within the text. Blue coloured cloth covered boards with yellow embossed Japanese writing to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Pale pink coloured tint to the top textblock edge. Photographic dustwrapper with white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. A book, very personal, on Japan of the 1950s and early 1960s, introducing its history, people and culture. Translated from the Italian by Eric Mosbacher. Softening of the top backstrip edge and fading to the lower edge. Rubbing to the lower book edges with age toning of the textblock edges and pages. The pink colouration to the top textblock edge has faded in patches. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and top backstrip edge. Numerous small tears to the dustwrapper edge with rubbing of the dustwrapper panels. Small triangular crease to the top right-hand corner of the front fold over panel.
